Talk About Fonts

Fonts! We love them!

Though some of us might just have a love/hate relationship with them. Sometimes choosing the right font can take longer than designing your graphic! What we just might need is an easy way to see how a word will look in different fonts! Let’s see if we can’t help you with this.

Fonts can create feelings, they help get across the overall point of your project. Look at this font below. If you’re a dog lover, it’s kind of a must have right? I don’t know about you, but it makes me want to create something just to use the font! Fonts can be fun and fancy, and they’re all so necessary!

As a creative, I bet that you have like a zillion! I know I do!

Look at this font!!! Totally adorbs.

I’m not going to try to reinvent the wheel here; There is so much information available about Typography, what I am going to do is give you some really good resources that I use or have heard about. All in one (hopefully tidy) little post 🙂

I guess it’s safe to say that your need depends greatly on your creative outlet. There are many ways to skin this particular cat (where on earth did that saying come from?!?). For instance if you use Adobe products, they offer several options within their programs to help you out. But if you don’t, or you want decorative fonts, there are many resources for you as well, you just have to look for them.

Creeative Fabrica logo

Creative Fabrica is a fav, and I’ll post more below.

Creative Fabrica has a good bit going on where fonts are concerned! But did you know that they’re not just a great place to get great graphics and fonts?

Now this is what I meant by not re-inventing the wheel. There is SO MUCH information in their Ultimate Font Guide! We’re talking types, installation, platforms, tips, and lots more. Be sure to go there and learn to your hearts content!

They also have a few fun and interesting tools, so check that out while you’re there. Plus, if you go to “Tools” on the CF menu, you will find what they call the “Font Cloud“. I have yet to use this, but you might want to check it out, it looks pretty awesome and it’s free!

Resources for Managing and Viewing Your Fonts

FontBase This is what I use.

I heard about this one pretty recently and I love it! It is a download and there is a free version and an additional features version for a small subscription fee. It’s similar to NexusFont below. That alone made it worth looking into.

Nexus Font

I don’t remember when/where I found this, but I really like NexusFont.

NexusFont I didn’t want their website to scare you, so I found a link on cnet (everyone trusts cnet) and the added bonus is that they review the program! It’s easy to set-up and totally worthy. Just type in the word(s) you want and it will show you how it will look in all of your fonts. Perfect right?!?

Wordmark.it  An online tool that is another good way to see words typed in your system installed fonts. They’ve added features and created a paid version. The paid version looks to be inexpensive and you can tag your fonts, and switch the background color between light and dark. It has been around a while, but if you haven’t tried it lately, maybe give it another look.

RightFontz  Another one I’ve not tested, this one is for a Mac. It is a download, and has what seems like a one time purchase price. It also has integrations to Adobe and Affinity Designer among others.

Not Sure Which Fonts Work Well Together?

FontPair

“Fontpair is a typography tool that inspires the creative community to design better.” They also have a whole list of Typography Resources that includes video and inspiration! Some of these I have heard of, some I have not. And if you’d really like to learn more, be sure to visit their Typography 101 links. One of the destinations is Canva. There really are resources and information available everywhere!

Fonts In Use is kind of cool for inspiration. It shows you fonts in use.

What Font Logo

WhatFont is a Chrome extension that I haven’t tried but have heard is cool. It tells you what fonts are currently in use. The image is a link to the Chrome Store where you’ll find their description and website.

Remember that if you are selling your craft; just like with any graphics that you use and did not create, it is important to consult the terms of use, license, or angel policy from within your source. Sometimes the creator just doesn't want their font to be sold on anything at all "Personal Use Only", however, in my experience, fonts in particular are frequently OK to use as long as they are "flattened" and/or the entire font is not used, uploaded to another platform, shared, or otherwise directly made available to another person.

Want More?

There are so many places to get fonts! Both for free and paid.

I tend to shy away from some of the free resources because of unreliable or missing license information. This is just a short list of my favorites (and they regularly offer free fonts):

As you likely already knew, fonts are a pretty big topic and so it should be! They’re a part of how we communicate, what we see and read every day and everywhere! I really just wanted to give you some quick and trusted resources. I hope I accomplished that for you.
